Imperial Rome

This is an image of a Triumphal Arch in Rome. Triumphal Arches were built to honor the deceased that have fought in major battles.
This particular Arch is the Arch of Titus and was built by Emperor Dominitian shortly after his brothers death (Titus) in the battle of Jerusalum.

The Insula in this photograph isnt unlike the Apartments we see in society today. The similar multi storey element is still present in our architecture.

This is a typical photograph of the Colliseum in Rome, Italy.
The Colliseum was a theatre used as a games arena for the Emperor and other followers to watch gladiators in battle.
The Colliseum still stands today.

Caryatids like shown in this picture were used in Classical Greece to support the building weight, serving the function of a pier, column or capital..

The Caryatids were generally carved and moulded in the shape of a human female figure.

I have chosen this photograph to resemble the Corinthian Order used in Ancient Greece Architecture.
The Corinthian Order is similar to the Ionic Column however the Corinthian is alot more richly decorated.
Many of the Corinthians are decorated with Lotus and palm leaves.

The Ionic Order Capitals shown in this photograph are taller and more narrow in shape. The Capital is more decorative in nature compared to the Doric Capital.

Clasical Greece

This image was taken from the Classical Greece period. The particular image shows the Doric Order Capitals or Columns used during this period. The Doric or any of the Capitals for that matter were used to hold up the horizontal blocks of the buildings.

Doric order capitals have no base.

The Pyramids at Giza, shown in the photograph were constructed during The Old Kingdom. These 3 pyramids were built for King Cheops, Khephren & Mykerinos.
These 3 pyramids were the first of the smooth sided pyramids.

The attached image here is of a Stepped Pyramid by the Architect Imhotep. The Stepped Pyramid wasnt smooth sided and was constructed with giant steps. These giant steps are said to be steps leading to heaven.

The Ziggurats were built for both Priests and Kings.

This image of a group of Corbelled Houses in Italy symbolises the basic shape of houses for this time. The corbelled roof structure was developed to "finish off" a roof and ceiling for these dwelling.
